What better way to really get to know a baby than to communicate through instinct, touch, & undivided attention for each other?
Many new parents are unsure of how they will interact with their newborn outside of the eat, sleep, & diaper cycle, let alone play with him. It’s easy to think of games to play with 5-year-olds, but with an infant? Can he do much more than stare at you, if he can even see that far?
Infants, even newborns, are far more responsive than most of us realize. Think of a computer constantly downloading information. That’s what the human brain does for about the first seven years of life. Infant massage helps many parents and caregivers engage this process and become more confident fostering it.
Infant massage is an honored tradition in many cultures and is gaining popularity in America. It has been found to increase baby’s relaxation while decreasing her fussiness and improving her sleep. She feels respected and responded to, thus, strengthening the emotional bond between the parent and child and increasing their ability to communicate with each other. Mothers get an extra bonus: the skin-to-skin contact that massage provides stimulates her ability to produce breast milk.
If you would like your child to receive infant massage, it is recommended that he be treated in the comfort of his own home, but it is not required.
